The service

What Ridge Repointing Involves

Ridge tiles run along the peak of your roof and are traditionally bedded on mortar. Over the years, frost, wind and movement crack and wash out that mortar until the ridge tiles work loose.

You need ridge repointing when you can see cracked or missing mortar along the ridge, ridge tiles that are visibly out of line, bits of mortar on the ground or in the gutters, or a leak near the top of the roof.

Done properly, it isn't just filling cracks. Loose ridges should be lifted, cleaned and re-bedded on fresh mortar, then pointed, so they're held securely rather than just covered over.

Falling ridge tiles

Loose ridge tiles can be lifted by high winds and fall from the highest point of the house, which is a real safety risk.

Water at the top

Gaps under the ridge let rain in at the top of the roof, where it can travel down and soak timbers and insulation.

More damage below

A falling ridge tile can break the tiles beneath it, turning a small job into a bigger repair.

Pests getting in

Open gaps along the ridge give birds and insects a way into the loft.

Common Mistakes
Homeowners Make

  • Pointing over loose ridges instead of lifting and re-bedding them
  • Using the wrong mortar mix, which cracks again within a season or two
  • Leaving it until tiles have already blown off

In detail

Ridge Repointing Across
Leicester & Blaby

Lift, clean and re-bed

Loose ridge tiles are carefully lifted, old mortar is cleaned off, and the tiles are re-bedded on fresh mortar and pointed. Sound sections may only need repointing.

Hips and verges

The same mortar details are often used on hips and verges. We check these at the same time and include them in your quote if they need attention.

Dry-fix alternatives

On some roofs a mechanically fixed dry ridge system is the better long-term option because it doesn't rely on mortar. We'll explain if it suits your roof.

Guarantee

Cement work such as mortar and pointing comes with a 5-year guarantee, confirmed in writing with your quote.

Homes and Rental Properties

Most of our ridge repointing work is for homeowners, from terraces and semis to bungalows and detached houses. We also work for landlords who need a reliable fix and a clear record of what was done. Every job gets the same approach: a proper look at the roof, photos of what we find, and a fixed price before anything starts. If you're a landlord or a prospective buyer rather than the owner occupier, a £75 fee applies to the inspection; for homeowners it's free.

How to Choose a Roofer

Ask for a written, fixed price rather than a day rate, so the cost can't creep up once the scaffold is up. Ask to see photos of the problem before agreeing to anything. Check the guarantee, and get it in writing. Ask who will actually be on your roof. With us, it's Bobby Button and a team of four from start to finish, and the guarantee for your job is confirmed with your quote.

What to Expect on the Day

We turn up when we say we will and talk you through the plan before work starts. The roof is kept weathertight at the end of every working day, and we clear away old materials and debris as we go. When the job is finished we check it over, show you the completed work and tidy the site properly, so the only thing you notice is a roof that works.

Your Guarantee, Explained

Guarantee length depends on the type of work. A new roof is guaranteed for 25 years as standard. Work involving breathable membrane, including many leak repairs, is usually guaranteed for 10 years and in some cases 5. Cement work such as mortar and pointing is guaranteed for 5 years. Whatever your ridge repointing involves, the exact guarantee is written into your quote, so you know where you stand before you say yes.

"Robert and his team done a fantastic job. I had a leak on my roof which they fixed very promptly, I also had them re-point my ridge tiles on my roof and it looks great. Very happy with the service, would definitely recommend."
